Amman, Jordan – For the second year in a row, the Remote Closeness* collective is happy to present their latest artistic engagement, Shifting Grounds: ديمومة at the MMAG Foundation between 20 – 22 October in Jabal Amman. This event invites artists, institutions and art practitioners to question the use of resources and materials, and explore alternate institutional practices in event production.

Shifting Grounds: ديمومة is the first of its kind in Jordan, as its curatorial concept strives to be as ecology-conscious as possible, seeking to bring to light and tackle issues of sustainability in the arts. It welcomes artists, cultural institutions, and the general public to attend an event that considerably reduces the use of materials and resources, and adopts alternative methods for traditional exhibition building.

This event is the result of 10 months of research and of connection-building with individual artists, researchers and cultural institutions. In addition to some examples of sustainable art pieces, the event offers a rich public program consisting of Sharing Sessions, talks, a panel discussion, unplugged performances, and public interactive art-making stations.

The Sharing Sessions are workshops that will introduce artists to more sustainable approaches including discovering eco-printing, working with local clay, anthotype printing and discussing artist studio best practices.

The public talks approach the topic of sustainability in the arts from different angles. The first talk includes a session with the Shifting Grounds residents Duha Abu Yahya and Sara Al Ramahi, who will present their research findings as well as launch a Jordan-specific eco-friendly guide they have been designing. The second talk is a panel discussion with 4 guests including an artist, a gallerist, an art collector, and an art marketeer who will come together and discuss how sustainability in the arts relates to the art market. The final talk sheds light on sustainable art practices and the environment through the lens of recent art history, with a particular focus on art from the SWANA region.
